Play Away: 20th November 1971 (Seventies TV Season)
The introduction to this series of posts on 1970s TV can be found here:
I've got the flu! I've never been so ill in my life but didn't want to post nothing all week so a largely pictorial post about this LEGENDARY show so that we can all enjoy a seventies childhood together. Because if it doesn't include string art and Brian Cant with a pantomime horse it isn't a seventies childhood. You have to wonder how much weed went into creating this, it's so mellow.
Play Away (1971 to 1984) ran for so long that actors and musicians who appeared on it read like a great and good of British entertainment of the time: Brian Cant, Toni Arthur, Derek Griffiths, our old friend Julie Stevens, Lionel Morton, Chloe Ashcroft, Floella Benjamin, Johnny Ball, Jonathan Cohen, Tony Robinson, Alan Rushton, Spike Heatley, and even (get this one) Jeremy Irons.
One of the best things about it is that the gammons can't immediately go 'Oh look how much better it was with no People of Colour': this show shows the real Britain of decent people. Perhaps that's why they never talk about it!
